27 imagesDanmark is characterized by its flat landscape and until now people had to travel abroad to go skiing. With the opening of CopenHill, it is now possible to go skiing daily in Copenhagen and you do it on the top of its new waste-to-energy plant. While you ski, tons of garbage are being incinerated to produce clean energy and heat for 30.000 of households, which is in line with the aim of becoming the first carbon neutral capital by 2025. Bjarke Ingels, the architect behind this idea, inaugurated the urban mountain in October 2019 after almost a decade in the making. Locals and tourists came to glide down the 400m green slope while enjoying a breath-taking view of Copenhagen skyline and across the see as far as to Sweden. Many onlookers also visited Copenhagen’s new landmark to see slalom competitions, freestyle, uphill cycling, etc. CopenHill Urban Mountain also has a free access hiking trail and recently hosts the world highest urban climbing wall of 80m. The pictures are part of the assignment for CopenHill in the framework of the opening of the site in October 2019. For more detailed photographs of the building, you can have a look at the online archive of The Library of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation https://www.arkitekturbilleder.dk/bygning/amager-bakke/
